We are very lucky to have Oscar, a 2023graduate of Qibao Dwight High School, currently studying Sport Management at New York University, to talk to us about life at NYU and his firsthand experience as a Sport Management major.
Here is our interview:
Q1: What was your experience like afterentering NYU? Did you feel any pressure?
Oscar: Overall, I adapted quite well afterentering NYU. The transition from high school to university didn't have a significant impact on my daily studies and life, perhaps because the intensity of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Qibao Dwight was not much different from university studies. The most significant characteristics of NYU are its diversity and strong career orientation. In the dorm, on the way to school, and in the classroom, I can see students from all over the world, regardless of age, race, nationality, or cultural background. Everyone comes to NYU to seek intellectual interchange with professors and classmates, which broadens their understanding of many things. Additionally, both in class and after class, I strongly feel the emphasis placed on future careers by everyone, whether they are freshmen or graduate students. Professors in the classroom
emphasize the importance of both learning knowledge and networking. I have also started preparing to participate in internships related to my major during this summer break. This campus culture is perhaps very different from other universities and liberal arts colleges. As for pressure, to be honest, most of it comes from daily life. It was my first time leaving China to live in a new country, leaving behind the family that had been with me for 18 years, and starting to independently take charge of my own life. It was a completely new experience and challenge for me and the majority of international students. Unlike in high school, focusing only on study-related matters is definitely not enough in university. You also need to spend time and effort to settle your daily life, as a disorganized daily life will only affect your ability to concentrate on studying. Especially when you first move into the school dorm or rent an apartment off-campus, finding a suitable place to live in, visiting it in person, signing contracts, coordinating with roommates, buying furniture, and moving are all completely new experiences in life. But as time goes by, it doesn't take long for most international students to find a suitable rhythm and lifestyle, and that's when their international student life gradually stabilizes and gets on track.
Q2: Is there anything special about NYU'sSport Management program?
Oscar: Speaking of NYU's Sport Managementprogram, it wasn't my first choice during the high school application season. In my sophomore year, I participated in an online program led by a professor of the Department of Sport Management at Rice University. It provided me and about ten classmates with an experience of the Sport Management major, especially in the area of Sports Facility Management, using authentic university curriculum materials and teaching methods. However, my impression at the time was that the content was very academic, or in other words, more theoretical and lacking practicality. Perhaps this was due to the online teaching mode. But when I officially started studying Sport Management at NYU, I could clearly feel that the course offerings at NYU were different from those of Rice University. For example, the professors at NYU emphasized that Sport Management is a field closely related to sports but not exclusively so. Students studying Sport Management need to have a strong passion for sports and be prepared to acquire a range of skill sets that may not seem directly related to sports during their four years in university. This includes knowledge of business management, data analysis, law and ethics, and more. Of course, NYU doesn't completely disconnect these interdisciplinary courses from sports. Most of them will use sports as a medium to guide students to delve deeply into other areas of professional knowledge. From what I understand, this is one of the unique aspects of NYU's Sports Management program. Additionally, I want to quote something our professor said at the beginning of the school year: "This is NYU, this is New York City. Isn't this the most special thing about NYU? While other universities have summer or winter programs such as field trips or internships in New York City, we get to live in New York City every day, study in office buildings, and pursue our dreams. This is what many people dream
of!"
Q3: Can you share some aspects of your lifeat NYU, including your studies in sport management? This could include your schedule, courses, or daily life.
Oscar: Studying sports management at NYUcomes with distinct advantages. Firstly, you have access to the complete range of sports industry resources in New York City, including major leagues such as
MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLS. The influence of the sports industry permeates every level of these leagues, from the highest to the lowest. Secondly, NYU has a diverse range of professors. For example, in my current semester, I have encountered two completely different professors in the field of sports management. One is a professor with long hair who is dedicated to combining sports with philosophy. He and his team formally submitted a proposal for the "International Basketball Day" to the United Nations last year, and it was unanimously approved, resulting in the official recognition of
International Basketball Day worldwide. The other professor is currently working as the Director of Sales at the New York Yankees. In his class, he imparts practical experiences and skills that are highly useful for career development. He also invites guest speakers from various fields, allowing us to gain a true understanding of the daily work of professionals in the sports industry, the challenges they face, and the advice they have for college students. We have benefited greatly from these experiences. One particularly exciting aspect is that our final exam for this course (a thematic
presentation) will take place at the Yankees' home stadium, with staff members from the Yankees joining as guest judges. I believe this will be a very interesting and challenging experience!
However, everything has its pros and cons.I won't blindly praise the sport management program at NYU, as I believe there are some areas that could be improved. For example, the scheduling of courses can be challenging because some sport management professors have part-time jobs and work during the day. As a result, many of our major courses are only offered in the evening on weekdays (Monday to Thursday) from 6:20 PM to 8:50 PM. This can be inconvenient when it comes to arranging our own free time. Additionally, the level of students studying sports management at NYU varies. I don't mean to pick on any particular student, but I can sense that some of my classmates are unclear about why they chose this major or whether they truly have a passion for
sports. They may not be fully prepared to face the difficulties that arise during the study of sport management. We must recognize the fact that when a hobby becomes a profession, its appeal often diminishes significantly. Therefore, whether we can maintain our enthusiasm becomes a significant test. Of course, NYU also has many ambitious and focused students. Some may not have determined their career direction after graduation yet, but they have already accumulated much experience, some with more than five internships in the sports industry before entering university. Others are student-athletes who are pursuing their dreams of a professional sports career while continuously exploring their talents in other fields. Some have even established and operated their own clothing brands for three years, with tens of thousands of followers on social media, and numerous NBA and NFL stars wearing their clothing. The NYU alumni network will only become more influential as a result, so this should be another factor to consider when thinking about the NYU sport management program. However, in the end, everything, including academic resources, alumni connections, and internship opportunities, is laid out in front of you. How you make use of them is your own choice. The key to success depends more on your determination. NYU will only serve as a platform and a powerful booster to help you pursue your dreams.
